We focus on quality and focus on doing what’s right for the people we serve. We have barbers that come in several days a month. If someone has a job interview, we can provide them with the clothes, the resume, the bus tickets and even a haircut!”

Providing HELP…GREAT LAKES AWARDS GRANT TO HORIZON HOUSE

Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation & Affiliates is celebrating its 50th
anniversary by awarding grants to nonprofit organizations making a difference in the communities where
its nine offices are located. Employees of the Indianapolis office today awarded two Brighter Futures
Grants, providing Horizon House and U.S. Dream Academy – Indianapolis with $25,000 each.

Brighter Futures Grants are an extension of the philanthropy work done by Great Lakes, which is
dedicated to helping more students from low-income households, students of color, and first-generation
students get into and through college so they can go on to successful lives and help build strong
communities. Employees at Great Lakes’ nine offices across the country were invited to engage in the
Brighter Futures grant-making process, with a broader focus on promoting lasting change in their local
communities. A total of $525,000 in Brighter Futures Grants has been awarded to 14 nonprofit
organizations based on the funding priorities selected by Great Lakes employees.

“Great Lakes is committed to making the communities where we live and work even greater,” said
Richard D. George, President and Chief Executive Officer of Great Lakes. “Horizon House and U.S.
Dream Academy are already doing good work, and we’re excited to help them make an even bigger
impact with our Brighter Futures Grants.”

With its $25,000 Brighter Futures Grant, Horizon House will continue services in Marion County, including a day shelter,
case management, job readiness training and medical care.

“Horizon House is tremendously grateful and honored to be the recipient of a Brighter Futures Grant from
Great Lakes,” said Executive Director Teresa Wessel. “The agency is committed to serving as Indiana’s
champion and trusted leader for supporting homeless neighbors to achieve long-term self-sufficiency, and
this generous gift will prove invaluable in our efforts.”

Providing HELP

Horizon House invites individuals experiencing homelessness to engage in services through street outreach and on-site interactions. The street outreach team engages individuals living on the streets by building trusting relationships, providing life-sustaining supplies and linking them to services/resources with the goal of ending homelessness.

Basic/Engagement Services on-site (day shelter, restrooms, showers, laundry, clothing, haircuts and mail delivery) are crucial for helping individuals maintain their dignity, while meeting their immediate needs.

Inspiring HOPE

Horizon House offers integrated, comprehensive services that focus on helping individuals and families overcome the barriers they are facing. We provide a safe place and convenient access to services, using a case management approach. These essential services are ongoing and help create changes in their lives, empowering them to more toward self-sufficiency.

Horizon House’s goal is to help those experiencing homelessness to become stable, self-sufficient and successfully housed.

Case managers provide assessments, referrals, goal planning, support and accountability services to help individuals overcome personal barriers to income stability and housing.

The ultimate objective for every individual that walks through our door is to find a home!
