Every night in the United States, an estimated 600,000 people live on the streets. In Indianapolis, there are estimated to be 5,000 to 8,000 people who are homeless in a year. This October, we want people to prove that even a small act of love, such as donating a pair of socks, can make big difference in the lives of our neighbors who are homeless.
Socktober is an easy and fun movement to help the homeless in your community during the month of October. Kid President video creator, Brad Montague, launched Socktober as a way to get socks and other necessities to the homeless. See Kid President’s latest video about Socktober by Clicking Here.
Socks are one of the hardest items to get donated and needed the most. Every day at the Front Desk, our staff give out socks to homeless neighbors. Many neighbors walk a great deal, and some have foot issues. Therefore, it is very important that we always have new socks in stock to meet the demand.
We’re asking you to donate new, white, athletic socks for men and women. Ask family and friends to donate socks too, and before you know it, you’ll have a good collection of socks to bring to Horizon House.
Promote your efforts on social media using the hashtag – #Socktober.
If you find you do not have the time to coordinate sock donations, please consider a donation to Horizon House so we can purchase socks and other needed items.
