Horizon House Executive Director, Teresa Wessel was invited to speak about homelessness at Al Salam Foundation’s 2017 Civic Engagement Iftar recently.
If you are not familiar with an “iftar”, it is the meal eaten at sunset during Ramadan. The time of Ramadan is a month when Muslims fast each day from sunrise to sunset. It is also a time when they consider ways to give financially to others in need, or to organizations who are doing good work in the community.
It is unusual for a non-Muslim to be invited to speak at an iftar, so this was a great privilege for Horizon House, and a recognition by the Muslim community of the significant impact that Horizon House is making in the greater Indianapolis area.
Foundation members wanted to learn more about how Horizon House helps homeless neighbors and how they can get involved. We were honored to be at this event and able to engage Muslims to join us to impact homelessness.
William makes strides in his job and his life
William stopped by Carol’s office to give her the good news. Carol, Employment Services Coordinator, had worked with William for some time. William would get a job and somehow could not maintain it. When Carol questioned him, he revealed that he tried to do things his way instead of his supervisor’s way. That’s when Carol suggested he try it another way by listening, doing what was requested and being a model employee.
The day William stopped by, it was to tell Carol that he followed her advice. A few months ago, William obtained a new job. He let go of his previous behavior and “did it Miss Carol’s way”. He was there to report that he was being promoted. In addition, his employer found out William’s son was graduating from college in Georgia so gave him time off and funding to go to the graduation. Way to go William!
Thank you to all who donated for #Undy500
We ended May with 1,864 donations of men’s and women’s new underwear for our neighbors! This is amazing! Thank you to everyone who donated to impact #Undy500. Special thanks to News Anchor, Beth Vaughn, and RTV6 for promoting our #Undy500 drive to get 500 pairs of underwear donated. With their help and weekly updates, we quickly surpassed our goal! Every day at the Front Desk we give out underwear for those in need. It’s one of the hardest things to get donated but needed the most along with new socks. Watch for Socktober in October when we collect new socks!
